sick! again. i don't suspect a weak immune system to be the culprit so much as the three days i've spent in pre-k classrooms this week. no amount of hand washing or breath holding can protect against four-year-olds who want to hug, climb, hang, sneeze, and lick on you. everyone's feverish and achy in the house, and i'm consistently feeling the cat's forehead and wondering if she's sleeping more than usual, hoping she won't get it too. nervous mama. the australian open's been on our television all hours of the day for the last two weeks (though we skipped our own tennis lesson yesterday- oops), and being cooped up in front of record-length tennis matches lends itself to LOTS of simultaneous online clickin' around. i even dusted off an unused polyvore account i've had for three years... and i hate polyvore. but i want all these pretty spring things. (i'd have to stuff one of R's guitars in that amazing stripey case because i'm no musician. poser!)

didn't realize how really and truly i'm digging pinks, browns, and creams until i went through some snaps from the past week. 1. tossed my stash of BPA-laden plastic utensils into the recycling bin and replaced them with earth-friendly (and aesthetically pleasing!) bamboo, which we used for pie night. 2. inherited a friend of a friend's four years' worth of martha stewart livings! pays to have sweet friends who actually read my blog! 3. sported tara-lynn's handiwork last weekend when R surprised me with a trip to my favorite curry place (a couple cities away) for lunch. 4. very possibly squealed at the sight of anthro's new spring window display. 5. scooped up these dreamy melissa & doug magnetic 'paper' dolls to keep around for- ahem- all our friends' kids who come over.

these shoe clips from ban.do? brilliant. the sequin hearts will BE MINE (valentine pun 100% intended). i also think i oughta toss confetti artfully in and around my shoes, since they're all over the floor already anyway. looks so good.

apparently pie parties are a christmas tradition i was unaware of, so i missed the proverbial boat when it came to throwing one last month. but i wasn't especially interested in pie until we watched all of pushing daisies in a few big bites recently. after seeing photos of others' holiday pie parties, and nearly coming to tears from graham cracker crust cravings thanks to netflix, i knew what i must do. besides, january needs more parties. the people voted, and the berry cobbler took home first prize, followed by the french silk and strawberry lemonade pies which tied for second. but anyone who's willing to bake a pie, bring it to me, and leave the leftovers for me to reheat for breakfast is a winner in my book.
"how much longer do i have to wait, lady?"

god, forget the five dollar footlong. come to jacksonville, florida (southwest has cheap flights in and out of here all day long), find a little grocery store called native sun, slam down your $6.99, and say three little words. "riverside reuben, please." tofu, swiss cheese, sauerkraut, dill pickles, chipotle russian dressing (veganaise, sweet relish, chipotle peppers, ketchup) on rye? the only sandwich i care about.

ugh. 29 years of toting around the uncomfortably named astrological sign 'cancer', and the universe goes and changes things on me now? my sign was never a particular point of pride for me- as a cancer i'm allegedly crabby and overly sensitive (ie: challenging to date), but 2.5 years ago i was pleased to discover that my boyfriend, the (former) virgo, was my ultimate match. (i would've proceeded with the relationship even if he hadn't been; cancers are stubborn.) so now, only a few years after shaking up my childhood solar system paradigm and telling me pluto was all a lie, rich nerds are telling me i'm a GEMINI. what's a gemini?! my little sister, formerly a cancer, is still hanging tough in my little compartment of the zodiac, so at least i've got my twin. thank god we never went through with those weird yin yang/69 tattoos...

january's really here, isn't it? i'm happy to report that this year is already off to a phenomenally better start than last year was. i'm sure i'm not the only one who has gotten the blahs at the realization that the tinsely lamppost decorations no longer line the streets. but not this time, friends! the last couple weeks have been filled with (1) running in new shoes, which is made easier with the disappearance of (2) belgian christmas chocolates from the house (black santa's hat was digesting at the time of this photo). it's been c-o-l-d by anyone's standards, not just this floridian's, so (3) i'll still get plenty of wear out of my cozy and beautifully-made new cowl, and (4) R might finally finish the 544 pages of teeny print in the mozipedia he received for his birthday back in september. (i giggle every time i walk into a room and see morrissey's face where my boyfriend's should be.)

i'd completely forgotten about irregular choice until today! six or seven years ago i loved to save my pennies to splurge on an über silly pair of shoes that i'd wear to my (miserable) legal assistant job! (many an attorney eyebrow was raised.) i talk and talk about wanting to simplify my wardrobe, to kick out some of the 60s prints and replace them with grey grey grey, but it'll never happen. not when i draw inspiration from shoes that are just as pretty as cupcakes!

i "guest teach" every day ("substitute" doesn't sound nearly as important), and often have hours at a time where i've got the luxury of reading a good book for a paycheck. (on the flipside- i have a ton of pipsqueak horror stories, so don't go getting jealous.) i burn through books and love recommendations!
please! what books do you recommend? i know i've got at least a few blog readers out there; come out of the woodwork and comment with your favorites! thanks!
*above photo: three-month-old jude with the obnoxiously large cat book we couldn't refuse. capturing her in that moment had us in hysterics.

i know i'm not the only one who checks myself out on photo booth when the bathroom mirror is otherwise occupied by a toothbrushing boyfriend, i'm just not ashamed to admit it! voila- the last night of 2010 and the first morning of 2011 (see also: the boots i've lived in the past week). i have a cold, and rang in the new year cozied up with good friends and one hot toddy (as predicted).
i feel like new year's resolutions are best kept private, maybe because the only person i want to answer to is myself when i kick them to the curb mid-january. however, this is not just any new year... it's the year i'll turn 30. oof. my little body has fared pretty well for the last three decades with minimal health consciousness, but i don't want to push my luck. i've been vegetarian for over a third of my life which has definitely kept me pretty healthy, but the days of getting my exercise from going out dancing a couple nights a week are over. i ran in high school (i was a bad ass!), and as of 2011 i'm back at it, which should be a piece of cake with the advent of ipods since the eight-mile runs of my youth. i also want to bake exclusively from scratch (see ya, funfetti) and become a superior flosser. there are a hundred other things i want to make happen for myself this year, but these are three you can hold me to. check back for updates on my health makeover, and hopefully donuts won't show up in any 2011 posts- no matter how cute.
